Paul Trevellion and drawing World Class Footballers

Darren Hubbard - Paul Trevillion is a graphic artist par excellence who specialises in sport and is famous for his “You are the Ref” series of graphic illustrations in the Sport’s Observer and, perhaps more famously, Roy of the Rover’s.

In this video we hear the master tell us he doesn’t do speed lines, that’s why his work is not comic art. What is really arresting is that he see’s the world class footballer’s that he draws as objects. So Ribery is a razor and Modric is Mozart. Truly inspirational.

6 Designs for 6 Weeks - No 5 Holland, Spain Infographic

hollandspain_infographic1

The infographic above charts Spain and Holland’s position at every World Cup since 1930, that’s 80 years . With the exception of 1974 and 1978, when the “total football” generation reached the final on both occasions, only to be defeated by Germany and Argentina, Holland have achieved very little.

Spain, on the other hand, have only gone as far as the quarter finals in 1934, 1994 and 2002. Beyond that, Spain have consistently under achieved. However, their 2006 European Championship-winning generation are looking strong enough to win the tournament right out, but they will be tested by a burgeoning Dutch team.

Whatever happens, it should be a classic!

6 Designs for Weeks No 4 - Gye Nyame

gye_nyame

All African hopes are pinned on Ghana.  If they beat Uruguay tonight, they will be the first African team to reach the semi finals.  Who can forget Roger Milla and the Cameroonians in Italia 92, but they only reached quarters, so this is seminal stuff for Ghana.

gye_nyame

I am reliably informed that Ghana have a secret weapon to becoming the first African nation to win the World Cup - Gye Nyame.  Found everywhere in Ghana,  Adinka symbols are used as amulets, and Gye Nyame, which means Supremacy of God, is used mainly as decoration. But in this instance, the Ghanaians are using it to symbolise their unwillingness to be beaten, and if they are, they believe only a superior being can undo these plucky West Africans.  So we wish them all the best tonight.

Once again, we giving away this one-off design. If you can predict the score between Uruguay and Ghana tonight, you can win a high quality T-Shirt supplied by Corp Clo Ltd. Click here to see the design and post your prediction. Good Luck!

6 Designs for 6 Weeks No 3 - I’m Pavlos…

pavlos_joseph_small
Here it is… Design No 3 - I’m Pavlos and I actually need the toilet!

Phew… thank God we’re through. Germany on Sunday will enable England to flex their muscles against bigger, better and stronger competition.

It looked so so different last Friday after playing Algeria. England were down in the dumps… Rooney frustrated, Gerrard dejected, Capello agog at the team’s lacklustre performance… the pressure was mounting, the nation was impatient, they needed something to lift their spirits… Then, out of nowhere, comes a portly, Greek-looking mortgage advisor, Pavlos Joseph, who inadvertantly wonders into the England dressing room after the match and says to a shocked David Beckham: “I’m Pavlos and I’actually need the toilet.

Having stumbled upon the England squad, post shower, Pavlos then realises that this is his once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to take the team to task over two  woeful performances.

In terms of entertainment:  England’s best so far, after beating Slovenia last night off course! And this is the source of our inspiration for this week’s design. Click here to see a hi-res pdf version.

We’ve also teamed up with Corp Clo, Birmingham-based embroidery and t-shirt printing specialists. If you can predict the score between Germany and England on Sunday, you can win a high quality t-shirt supplied by Corp Clo Ltd with the Pavlos Joseph design applied to it. The Punctuation Family meets some characters

charactersI like the mobile generation’s adoption of punctuation to represent shorthand for happy and sad. I’ve taken it a step further and introduced charatcters to bring them to life using a range of serif and sans serif typefaces.
